As for improving I suggest the most terrible thing of them all: practice. The more you make the prettier it gets (copying others helps a lot, you can learn some ideas, ways to make the pattern and then start to create your own style). You could also try to make your strokes thinner and rounder. Adding more lines, feather-like shapes and dots always makes the design look lighter and more elegant.
